Just a question. Say a clarinet has a stuffy Bb that is somewhat sharp. Do you think changing the register vent would fix this. Would it also effect the clarion and altissimo notes as well?

Maybe, and maybe. Try Abe Galper's aftermarket vent, it's gotten good reviews here on the BB.

Get an expert to have look before mucking around with anything radical. It is a stuffy note anyway it just needs to be voiced optimally.

I get around the stuffy Bb syndrome by venting ( A R OXX/OOO lh B/E ) or by using the side key alternate Bb with the same venting. It's not so bad once you get used to it.
I also agree with Mark P that you should not just slop any new register vent in there without an "expert" opinion--perhaps the Brannens.

I have seen people on here mention cutting the tube down. I wonder what kind of difference that makes.
I have an old metal Madelon that the Bb is nice and clear on with no suffiness that I can detect. I wonder if all metal clarinets are like that. But every time I play it, it seems like a little treat...and I wish my other clarinets could have such a Bb.

When I had problems with my A clarinet playing softly in the high registers, I had my repair tech file down the metal. I didnt notice a drastic change in the pitch, but those high notes that you have to whisper out, like the second mvt of the Mozart Concerto came right out.

MP is right. Get on the El, get off at the Main St. stop in Evanston, and go see the Brannens. They can assess the horn and tell you what if anything is wrong. Throat register problems can be anywhere from the tone holes to the barrel to the mouthpiece to your embouchere. No sense filing down or replacing stuff until you know what is really wrong.
