 hardening reeds
Author: Barry

I pass this tip on for what it's worth.
My technician recommended using the kind of liquid bandage you spray on minor wounds and scratches as a hardener for reeds that have gone soggy or lost their zip. I tried it on some old reeds that I had discarded as unplayable, and it did indeed bring more than half of them back to life, and they are still playing well after several weeks.
Perhaps some of you out there have similar suggestions.

Whoa! Sounds like it's worth a try - I hope the stuff is nontoxic....Do you spray front, back, or both?

Funny you should mention this today. I was in the middle of playing a piece and the reed just died between phrases. I mean it just went limp. Never had that happen before.

Connie,
To answer your question, you should spray very sparingly on the top of the reed only. Is it poisonous? Once the stuff is dry, it seems quite inert. But you might want to check with a pharmacist. Best regards.

One of Sneezy's spondors, www.rxreed.com, has a chemical that supposedly will accomplish this. I haven't tried it, but I know that it's made from USDA approved ingredients (because I asked).
