 What's Your Favorite Sonata/Sontina
Author: theclarinetist

Hey,

I'm learning to avoid categorizing music as being the "best" of a certain genre, but I'm still sorta curious... so in everyone's OPINION, what is the best clarinet sonata/Sonatina, or which one do you like the best, however you wanna say it? -- Also include "suites" for clarinet/piano like Three Intermezzi or pieces like that if you want...

For me, it's a hard decision, but I'm gonna say Saint-Saens.... For whatever reason, I find the 3rd movement absolutely mesmorizing... It's probably not the best written sonata, but if I had to pick one to listen to (for the sake of enjoyment), it'd probably be Saint-Saens...

I wanna hear what everyone else thinks!

PS - Other favorites would be
Stanford
Brahms 2
Castelnuovo-Tedesco
Milhaud, Sonatine

not necessarily my favorite or the best, but I've been working on the Martinu Sonatina, and it's very enojoyable, not too technically demanding

There are so many wonderful sonatas. Here are my faves:

Arnold - Sonatina
Brahms - Sonatas Op.120 No.s 1 & 2
Milhaud - Sonatina
Poulenc - Sonata
Bax - Sonata

I heard the Howells on the radio today - I didn't know it. I think it will be worth looking into.

There are too many to list!

Rob
