 Vox Alto--Who is Vox?
Author: Bob A
Date:   2003-06-15 02:28

Yes I admit I am a "nerd", I had an Alto and sold it. Now have the hots to buy another to play with my guitar playing friend, but never heard of the maker. Cant find it in the archives. Could use some help please. This is a VOX alto clarinet the serial number on the clarinet is 3605. The instrument is marked VOX on the main body . The neck has a 90 on it and the case is marked "VOX ampliphonic". Anybody got a maker and/or date? Thanks

Bob A,

I can tell you what little I think I know about Vox. Back in the 60's they sold guitars and amps. I believe there was an association with Magnavox and Hohner. I've seen a couple of stenciled alto saxes with the Vox logo on it. I don't know if this was part of the same company or not. Vox did come out with one of the first electronic pick-ups for saxes. They looked very similar to the Barcus-Berry style pick-up in that they had to be soldered onto the sax neck.

As I said, my knowledge of the company is very little and there may be others out there that can correct my (mis)information. Perhaps some of our UK BB'ers can help out in this matter.

Bob,
I purchased my VOX flute from a studio musician in Los Angeles in the late 60's. He was selling extra instruments in order to be able to please the IRS. Aparently this flute was a bonus which came with his Vox instrument amplification system.

The Vox horns were stencil instruments on which the company installed their amplifier pickups and their name.

This is a silver open hole flute. I am not familiar with Italian flute makers so I don't know who the maker of this stencil horn was. I suspect your clarinet is a student level stencil horn.

IMHO, Terry

Aren't they just Orsi? Orsi now seems to have limited there range with emphasis on the contra bass end of things. More info on Orsi can be found at Contrabass Mania or La Sax. Some of their electronic gear is Italian too I think.

I've seen a few alto and bass clarinets stenciled "Vox" --- they are in fact Leblanc Vitos with a microphone pickup installed. Don't know who sold them (or why) --- but that's what they are.

Is there some where that I can see a picture of the soldered on pickup that was soldered onto the neck of the sax

It's an alto clarinet, not sax.
