 Routine Bass Clarinet Maintenance?
Author: Bob A

I have also posted this on the Yahoo Bass Clarinet Group.
Is there a primer for non-techies that would allow them to capably
perform routine maintenance on their own instrument with reasonable
success? If not could all you folk comment on methods I might use to
cure the "clatters" and at least cut down some of the loud key action.
It also possibly might be that my hearing aids magnify "normal" sounds
to the point of where I feel something is radically wrong. Who knows,
as their is no really qualified tech in my general area to ask for
comments. Comments please? What should I be doing
weekly/monthly/quarterly?

Bob,
Most of the 'clatter' is from a few typical sources: (1) Metal-to-metal contact between the two long l.h. pinky levers where their pins fit into the little holes in the mating linkages --- those two pins are usually jammed into the holes with a bit of plastic wrap or sometimes very thin Teflon sheet to fill in the gap and quiet them -- but that bit of film eventually wears out and must be replaced --- you can do that yourself. Remove the two pivot screws holding the long levers on their posts, cut two very small squares of plastic wrap or a bit thicker clear plastic, and stuff the pins back into their holes with the plastic wrap squares jammed in with them. (2) Key tubes rattling against their pivot screws or the posts at the ends --- if there's enough gap, you can insert a little shim (use another handy piece of plastic wrap, unless you happen to have the preferred thin Teflon sheet which probably only a tech would). Try those things first.

David,
FYI - I have found Teflon tape in various thicknesses at my local builders' supply and plumbers' supply stores. They sell it for sealing natural gas pipe joints and water pipe joints.
Regards,
Hans

Hans,
I wasn't referring to Teflon TAPE (which you are correct in noting as being available in hardware stores), but rather to Teflon SHEET, which is a bit thicker and has a self-adhesive backing --- it's available from Ferree's Tools.
