 Half a clarinet

Ok.. so this sounds crazy, but I am the new owner of half a clarinet. Let me explain...

Summer break began this week. At school, as we were cleaning out and inspecting the school-owned instruments, I found exactly one half of a clarinet in one of the cases. To be exact, it is the bell and the lower joint. That is all. Who knows what happened to the other parts. When I showed this unfortunate phenomenon to the band director, he took one look at it and said, "Toss it. It's not worth my time." Which is certainly true, since he has much bigger things to worry about right now. But I couldn't bear to toss this (beautiful, I might add) half a clarinet in the trash, so I asked if I could keep it and he said yes. Which brings me to a problem: what can I do with half a clarinet? Can I sell it? Use it? Can I buy the upper two joints somewhere to complete the set?

Any identifiable marking on the remnant?

If you have any pics, drop me a line - won't you?

Recently someone was offering half a clarinet on eBay; you can do the same. You could play it during football half-times

Also if you were only used it for half-hearted attempts, it should be fine.

Seriously, if you can find the brand and model, you could find an upper partner somewhere but the search would IMHO take a lot of time. Hence, the band director's "toss it."

If you look at the top of the lower joint, you can get the serial # and the bell might have the brand and/or model. If it was say Bundy, since they are used in schools more than Buffet, LeBlanc,etc.., then you can take it to a music store that deals with those brand names and order the upper tenon, barrel and mouthpiece. Or, like BobD said you can sell it on ebay. That is unless you like playing only "half" notes!

I love that lamp! I wonder, if maybe there was something serously wrong with the rest of it and the owner just decided to do something creative, or what...

The lamp is excellent!! I think, if all else fails, that will be my solution. Thank you all!

Go on ebay. If you can get another half anywhere, that's where. I wonder if mismatching would be an issue?!? If they have more or less the same bore size, maybe it would work?

But the lamp is cool.

You could go on eBay- or you could try to ask the manufacturer. What if you do all that and it plays horribly..... I suggest you just make the lamp and not waste your time and money to be on the safe side. If it is a wooden clarinet then you might want to consider restoring it a bit more than if it is plastic.

Several years ago, my son borrowed a clarinet from his high school as his was in for repair. This was the only horn that wasn't being used and we found out why. He brought it to me complaining that the bridge keys were binding. And they were... badly! A quick look and I discovered it was had the upper key joint of a Bundy, and the lower joint of a Yamaha. A few swipes with a file cured the binding, but intonation was a joke of course.
