what would you recommend a student to buy as his/her first edition of the piece? somethign "scholarly" with basset horn stuff or something more "traditional"

If you intend to play it with a pianist, you might also want to consider the difficulty of the piano part. I chose the Jack Brymer edition largely because the piano part seemed simpler than that of other editions I looked at. If you have access to a really good pianist, of course, this needn't be an issue.

Barienriter (?) edition has two parts 'normal' clarinet and bassett clarinet parts, it's the most scholarly.
