I noticed a new Pee Wee Russell CD (re-issue) on ?Verve---anyone heard it yet? He sure gets wild sounds from his clarinet!

The Sound of Jazz (the live CBS broadcast from december 1957) has just been released this year on DVD, and contains no fewer than three segments featuring PeeWee. Two are in a Chicago-style outfit led by Red Allen (and including Coleman Hawkins, Rex Stewart & Vic Dickenson) and one is the closing credits in which Pee Wee and Jimmy Guiffre [sp?] compare their respective wet & dry stylings.
It is a HOOT to see Pee-Wee in action!

In my not-entirely-humble opinion, Ask Me Now! (which I'm listening to right now on vinyl) is not one of Pee Wee's best. It's not bad, and Pee Wee sounds fine, it's just that band was not a good match, and the whole thing is kind of low-energy and relatively pedestrian compared to what he could do when matched with musicians more in his league (such as the aforementioned Red Allen).
