 5RV/Hite premier?
Author: SuzyQ
Date:   2003-06-12 20:33

I've been saving my money for a vandoren 5RV mouthpiece, but today, I was reading some archives on here, and heard about about the Hite premier mouthpiece. I am wondering how it compared to the 5RV and what would be the "better" choice for me especially since I've only been playing for 2 years.

I have old vito student clarinet, with a used buffet mouthpiece that came with my sisters used Buffet E-11. Oh, and my ligature is daniel bonade inverted. ( I really like it and to say the least I am quite proud of it, as it is the nicest accessorie I have for my clarinet.)

BTW, I am in the 8th grade and have only been playing for 2 years. I dearly love playing the clarinet, and am dying for summer band to start!

So my questions are:
Does the Hite premier work well with vandoren reeds 2 or 2 1/2? If not, what are some reeds that got well with it?

Would the hite premier and my bonade lig. work good together?

Would it be a better idea to wait for a new mp and save up for the 5RV
or buy the Hite premier now, and stick with it for quite a while?

As, you can tell, I am quite ignorant about clarinet mouthpieces and ligatures, but I say, I love this board and I have learned so much from it!
Thank you, Mark Charrette, for "managing" it!

Looking forward to your responses from you helpful people!

Kezzie

P.S. I am not the same person that wrote about mangaing multiple instuments a couple days ago... That was my sister. Anyway, I consider clarinet my "main" instrument.

SuzieQ....I think you would be much happier trying them both out with your horn; that's the only way you are going to know for sure....

Both mouthpieces are excellent and "better" is more a matter of personal preference.

Personally I would go with the Hite Premier and save my money. The Bonade lig will work fine on the Hite or VD 5RV.

In a couple years, after you've grown in experience (and finances) you can search some more. The search for the perfect mouthpiece seems to never end, and it's lots of fun.

Dan,
I do not know you or SuzyQ but I certainly appreciate your offer to this young lady that already has developed a love for the clarinet.
I am sure that for years to come she will richly reward you by entertaining others with the music she makes through this mouthpiece.

A Hite Premiere is a student grade plastic mouthpiece. The 5RV is professional standard.

I would say that the Hite Premier is a professional grade plastic mouthpiece. Or so I've been told by a couple of working artists who play on the Hite professional models and recommend the Premier as a low cost (and not as long lasting) substitute for the Hite models costing well over $100.

SusyQ:

I have played at various times over the last 4 years a VD B45, a Yamaha 4CM, and a Hite Premier. I have never played a 5RV. With that said I am currently playing my Hite Premier and find I like it better than either of my other mouthpieces. It does take a stiffer reed than the other MPCs so absolute direct comparisons are not possible. The only downside to the Hite is that it seems to be a little difficult to play well in the altissimo range, but over all I think it does everything else better.

I was "irritated" when I first purchased this mpc because the cork was too small to fit most of my clarinets - it would just fall out of the tenon or wobble around when I played with it. I contacted David Hite and he basically told me to live with it. After that I threw it in another case and only used it with the one clarinet it fit - an "outdoor" clarinet. I recently tried a friends custom Hite though and found it rather impressive so I pulled out the Premier, had it recorked to the correct size, and started using it. So far I like it.

With all that said, I second what other's have said. Try them both out (and others if you can) and purchase the one you like the best.

MOO,
Matt

SuzyQ

I have the Hite a"J" model. To the best of my understanding, it's basically the same as the Premier except that it's made of hard rubber instead of plastic. I love it! It worked fine when I played on 2.5s about a year or so ago (I had just started playing again after a 23 year layoff). I now play number threes. From what I've gathered from Hite's literature, the "J" model was optimized for #3 reeds, so I would imaging the same holds true for the Premier.

I also appreciate Matt's comment about it being difficult in the altissimo range. I find it somewhat trying regarding that as well, but from the posts I've been reading on this bulletin board, so does everyone else. In my case I would think I'm more the culprit than the mouthpiece.

Good Luck

I have played various VanDoren mouthpieces including the 5RV. I have found some to be pretty good and some that didn't work for me at all. I have also bought probably twenty Hite Premieres for students. They have all been very consistent in being easy to play, having good sound and good response, and being a tremendous value to boot. Every Hite Premiere i have played has been as good as about any VanDoren i have played, and better than most. I have a B45 in my "stable" (or is it "harem"?) of mouthpieces, so i don't mean to say i think VD makes awful stuff. It's just my experience that the Premiere is consistently good and would be a good mouthpiece even if it cost more.

I've used one in professional settings before--and nobody noticed any difference.

As always, YMMV

Brent

P.S. Matt--I had to look up "MOO"...i'd not seen that one before.

I am firmly resisting the urge to insert a bovine pun here...

Thanks everyone for writing me with you sugg. and ideas. I know these kind of questions come up so often on the BBoard, and it is probably easier to ignore them. :) Hearing that the Hite Premier was harder to play on the altissimo notes and took a stiffer reed was kind of discouraging but...

I am going to be trying out the Hite Premier, and the 5rv lyre, and the 2rv profile 88, and see how I like them.
I'll let you know what I decide.
I'm really looking forward to having a different mouthpiece than my old buffet mp. I'm going to have to build up my emboucher though, cause I've been using rico plasticover 3 reeds ( I'm fed up with them and their sound!) and am planning on switching to vandoren 2 1/2 for a better sound.

you all are great!
