Help Guys!!
I need to be able to do the gliss. in the big Rhapsody in Blue solo!! I have no idea how to do this!! Please help!

Go to a professional instructor on this one. Not easy to play and certainly difficult to teach....

Make sure you have a perfectly smooth, even chromatic from bottom to top;
play that a few (or few dozen) times. Each time thereafter as you begin the upward chromatic, with great air support, begin to lip down just a bit after you get past c or d. Then when you get to the top, you will come back up to normal embouchure and pitch. This will come gradually, but after a number of tries, you will feel it.

Hey, speaking of the smear, what versions/recordings of Rhapsody do you like?
I know a lot of critics hated it, but I'm partial to Bernstein's recording with the Columbia Symphony. Those melodies are gorgeous and deserve to be savored over the way Bernstein did it.
It's probably sacrilegious to prefer it over my recording of Gershwin himself with the Whiteman orchestra, but I do.t

Unfortunately Bernstein does some cuts in a few segments which ruins the piece for me.
I do not do a chromatic scale when I do this gliiss...see the written score.

Paul Whiteman of course. IMHO to do the portamento well you would really benefit from personal instruction. A soft reed and the right mp also help.
