Hi,
I was just wondering if any of you have tried an Etude thumb rest ? If so what do you think about them ???
I've just bought a Noblet clarinet which has a fixed thumb rest but have been playing a Buffet which has an adjustable one - I have small hands and have found that I get less pain whilst playing my Buffet with the rest set as high as possible.
The fixed one on my Noblet is too low so I'm looking for a solution.
Any thoughts / advise please ?

Probably the quickest solution would be to have the thumb rest turned around.... This would make it about a centimeter higher (give or take depending on the thumb rest). I once played an A clarinet with a fixed thumb rest that had be reversed... I found it problematic (because I like the thumb rest low), but this might actually be a good thing in your situation. See if you local repairman can do it!

I would recommend a search for previous threads on the subject. I tried it but wasn't happy with the results. Other people like them.

I used an etude plastic variety for a couple of years due to thumb pain and numbness. I recently decided that it was just not worth using. I broke 2 of the plastic etude thumbrests. I thought my hand position was bad.
All that said I could not have played at all if I hadn't used it for a while.
I have the Buffet adjustable thunbrest and had it moved up a bit. I found a thumbrest cushion that fits and gives good stability. I think it's a BG but I'm not sure.

I tried one too, and found it was too big for my hands. I felt I had a handful of stuff while playing and it limited my agility, so it came off after about a week. However someone with larger hands might find it quite satisfactory.

Will try to get the fixed one turned round - sounds like the best solution for me !
