Orsi, Prof. Romeo (b Como 18 October 1843; d Milano 11 June 1918) WWI, Bl fl Milano 1902-pl950.
1871-1911 clarinettist at Milano Scala opera; from 1865 collaborating with MAINO; 1880 established as MAINO & ORSI; 1881-87 developed a duplex clarinet in Bb and A; 1902 after Maino's death became proprietor; ('1910 took over the firm of BOTTALI; 1918 on the death of Orsi the firm changed its name to 'Prof. Romeo Orsi' under the management of Lorenzo Orsi (b 1889; d 1957) and later Roberto Orsi (b 1918); in 1930s collaborated with INCAGNOLI to produce new system oboe; Patricola and Bulgheroni trained with the firm. A catalogue of a1933 lists such instruments as contrabass saxophone, six sizes of sarrusophone, reed contrabass; the mark 'Orsi, Chiasso, / Milano' has also been reported. See also ZAVALDI.
