I have heard that for the Eb clarinet you just cut down Bb reeds. I have always just used Vandoren Eb reeds. Is there anything else out there as far a specially made for the Eb Clarinet??

I tried cutting down Bb reeds and hated it. So I just use the Vandoren Eb reeds.

I find that standard Eb reeds are too narrow for Eb mouthpieces. They usualy sound very reedy and sometimes harsh. Not good when you want to blend with a section. I've used V-12 cut-offs, and Blackmaster cut-off with more favorable results than standard Eb reeds.

I just use the regular Vandorren Eb's. They're fine for me. Too much of a hassle to trim regular Bb's, and why should you waste a good Bb reed for an Eb? Besides, if the reed is too big, with trimmings, the sound is fuzzy.

I know many people don't prefer Mitchell Lurie reeds over Vandorens, but Lurie has an Eb reed out that I feel is jast as good as the Vandorens. I don't really have an opinion on which is better for me. I like the Lurie's because as with the Bb reeds it is easy to put a reed on and have it play without taking time to sand just right or anything. And for the Eb playing I do now it is the best deal because I don't need to spend time working on reeds for an instrument I don't play a whole lot.
