 Clarinet and saxophone stands
Author: Amy
Date:   2003-06-05 14:57

In band next year I will be doubling on both Bb clarinet and alto saxophone. I did a search on Google but quickly realised that I don't know what's good and what's not. I need something durable that can be folded away, preferably. I have heard that you can get saxophone stands with a clarinet peg on it. Are these any good?

Thanks in advance,

Amy

"durable that can be folded away"

I have found that any sax/clarinet stand that can be folded will also become somewhat wobbly over time. What I recommend is a stand that can be easily disassembled for storage. I found a stand that holds my clarinet, flute and three saxs (sop, alto and tenor) at the Saxophone Shop in Evanston, IL a few years ago, but have forgotten the brand name (there is none of the stand itself). It is actually a four instrument stand--I added the flute peg because there was room. The stand is easily assembled, dismanteled and stored in a small duffle bag for transport to and from gigs. The alto and tenor brackets that hold the bells are lined with felt which allows quickly picking them up for use without being "grabbed". I do seem to recall that it was imported from Japan.

However, I would recommend avoiding the kind of stand that can be folded and stored in your sax case. They become almost unusable after time and can damage your instrument--I used to use them and speak from unfortunate experiance.

This is a good time to mourn the LaVoz stand, which folded AND had good stability.

Hamiltons are very common, but do tend to develop that wobbly streak.

Koenig & Meyer (www.gorginternational.com) makes a folding stand that will be stable, and Protec (www.ptcases.com) makes a particularly compact and solid model. They are a bit costly, but worth it.

There are a number of decent folding sax stands made out of 1/2" tubing (Stagecraft, Belmonte, LASax, etc.) but their legs don't lock and you could accidentally send your clarinet for a spill. They are fine for sax alone, but I don't trust my vertical instruments to them.

Mine has the name "Yorkville" on it. A picture is attached. It is very stable and holds two clarinets plus two saxes (alto or tenor) comfortably. There is also a model for one sax plus one clarinet.
Hope this helps,
Hans

"...This is a good time to mourn the LaVoz stand, which folded AND had good stability...."

How true! Thankfully I bought a few of them (alto, tenor and the double sax stand) back in the 70's and they are still going strong.

Like the Blayman clarinet stand, it is definitely time to bring them back ...GBK

Amy,

I use a Beechler saxophone stand and clarinet peg. It's a heavier stand than others I checked out. Personally, I think of the additional weight as being a good thing. It feels very sturdy to me. I have several vintage saxophones that would be difficult to replace if anything happened to them. Thus, I'm picky about the kind of stand I'll use for them. I've never had any problems with a Beechler stand.

If you end up opting for separate stands as opposed to a sax stand with a clarinet peg K&M has a nice one out now. It stores in the bell of most clarinets/cases. I picked mine up for around $20, and I love it. It fits into my Eb case, and my Buffet case, but not my old artley case. They're really popular among brass players, and I was incredibly excited when I saw one for clarinets. =)

Just a thought..

hans, looks good. Where did you get it? I ask because I saw a portable Yorkville music stand I liked but can't find a source.

BobD,
I bought it at Long & McQuade in Burlington, Ontario. They have about 20 locations across Canada. I don't know if they do mail order, but you will find them at:

http://www.long-mcquade.com/index.asp?section=1

The stand in the photo has removable supports for the saxes and clarinet and then it folds so that it's quite portable. I think it cost around $40 Canadian or $30 U.S. about 5 years ago.

Cheers,
Hans
