Is it possible to take a German mouthpiece or a German-geared mouthipiece (let's say for example, a Vandoren German model), put it on your average R13 and still be playable?

Leonard -

If you could make the German mouthpiece tenon fit in the R13 barrel socket, it would play, but you wouldn't like it. The intonation would be impossible, and the response and evenness of scale would be worse. The problem is not the facing but the chamber and baffle.

The same would happen if you put a French-style mouthpiece on a German instrument.

However, Viotto and others make German *style* mouthpieces for French instruments, set up for German reeds and a chamber and baffle as close to the German shape as possible. It's claimed that they produce a German-style sound and resposne on a French instrument, but the ones I've tried get only halfway.

The great players can make any tone. Get the inexpensive Sony CD with Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra playing Wagner. You'd swear Marcellus was playing a German setup, and when I turned on my car radio once and came in in the middle of it, I was absolutely sure it was a German player. Shows what I know. Marcellus could do anything.

Best regards.

To tell you the truth, im not exactly sure. It probably will produce a sound because the reed is still vibrating and air is going through it. It probably wont result in the best tone though.

Then could you direct me to a mouthpiece with a large baffle and a wide tip opening? Unless you actually go to the stores themselves, most companies refuse to tell you what kind of baffle they posses.

Don't Vandoren and Viotto make this sort of beastie?

Perhaps you should look up Chris Hill, the South Dakotan player and mouthpiece maker... he may be able to assist you or get you off of a fool's errand...

Leonard- German mouthpieces tend to have a much narrower tip opening than the average French mouthpiece. So what are you looking for?

Viotto makes French mouthpieces with a German style facing. Here's site where you can read about the tip openings:

http://www.olivacr.com/mouthpieces.html

The N1 and G3 facings would be a typical German facing.

What about the size of the baffle? Doesn't that make a difference in the tonal characteristic of the sound at all?
