Here is an update on the stereo search----I tried and liked a Rotel amplifier and CD player- Models RA-02 and RCD-02--- priced about 499 each. The clarinet is well defined and crisp in Brahms chamber CDs. I'm planning to use B & W 303 series speakers. Any comments?

Sounds lovely - I'm still saving for a B&O hi fi, but they are too expensive at present. I just love the Danish design aspect of them.

Rotel electronics and B&W 300-series speakers have reputations for offering excellent sound at reasonable prices.
Dave please tell us about your AM radio. Is it mid-20th century French? Wood cabinet or hard rubber?

I hate to disappoint, but my AM radio is a student model, Asian-made instrument with a plastic ("resonite") cabinet and synthetic (not cane) speaker cone. Tone controls are NOT undercut ("fraised"), and the keywork is plated, not solid nickel-silver (aka "German silver"). I'd really rather not talk about it, if you don't mind terribly. It's very embarrassing.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, really.
Having the appropriate technology in a demanding environment means choosing robust construction over delicate adjustments.
Besides, Lawrence Welk and Banjo music sound better through Whizzer cones, anyway.

In a previous incarnation, I resurrected a set of Apogee Duetta loudspeakers that a Florida 4 year old perforated (repeatedly) through the front metal grills with a bamboo skewer.
He was trying to make the voices stop, apparently.
They would have been better off with a nice, solid Philco.

Dave, are you still having trouble getting "Cat's Whiskers"? I'm told a thin bamboo sliver works as well if your spring is tight and the crystal is clean. Try a slice off a VD V12. Good luck. The Cincy and Chi stations should come in clear.

If you were a Boy Scout and got the Radio Merit Badge, you'll remember this. You built a super-simple radio -- so simple it had no power source, but ran off the strength of the radio signal. The aerial was connected to a large rock crystal that resonated to the radio signal. You tuned it by scratching various places on a crystal with a sort of straightened-out paper clip called a "cat's whisker," connected to headphones. If there was a really strong radio station nearby, you could sort of make out the program. Great fun for a kid.
