Today is Benny Goodman's birthday, which is known amongst anyone who probably has ever come in contact with me in the month of May as "Benny Goodman Appreciation Day." So, put on your Benny shirt and a BG album of your choice and have a molto Benny day!
[Edited to add:] Well, in my time zone, it's still the 30th!

He's not alive any longer. Probably someone on here knows when he died.

I looked around the web to see if I could find this out. It was sort of interesting because I found a place that said he died in 1996 and a couple of places conflicted as to whether the date was June 13 or June 20.
I think I found enough evidience to say he dies June 13, 1986 but you may find some other info.

The PBS site on the Ken Burns series quoting the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz Music gives his dates as 1909 - 1986.

All,
Just to add another interesting point - Mr. Goodman would practice 2 hours a day. When he passed away, he had his clarinet in his hands practicing a work by Brahms.

. . . Also, Goodman was shocked to hear that Artie Shaw eventually stopped practicing the basics like scales and arpeggios . . .
