I just picked up this clarinet at an auction and it appears to be in the pitch of 'A'. The length from barrel to bell is 25 inchs.
I thought I was buying a Bb clarinet. Are all *BT* clarinets pitched
only in 'A' ?
I also understand that Benny Goodman Played a Balanced Tone for a while.
Did he play a Bb or an 'A' ?

These are a large bore design, so to make the overall volume in the air column for a clarinet in A, they should be a little shorter than modern
(narrower bore) designs.
Did it come with a mouthpiece?
Getting a modern mouthpiece to play, in tune with these can be a challenge.
Some of the barrel makers have success with matching the bore of the clarinet to modern mouthpieces.
Still, a nice O'Brien crystal would make your life easier!

This clarinet is 1 1/2 inches longer than a Bb and plays one note lower. I checked the match between the mouthpiece and barrel and looks ok for the Selmer HS** crystal and the Lomax A1G rubber. It didn't come with a mouthpiece and the picture on the auction site was not good. Overall the clarinet is in great shape. I had planned on going with all cork pads and using this as a jazz instrument.

I had a *BT* A once and sold it when I got a new Yamaha SE in the key of A. SB is correct in that they will not play with great intonation with modern mouthpieces. They all have a tendency to play on the sharp side. Longer barrels and mouthpieces to match are a must. Once you have the right set up they play great.
