Hello...Does anyone know where to obtain (rent or otherwise) the band/orchestra parts to the Artie Shaw Concerto?...Thanks!

A quick search here on
Artie Shaw Concerto Parts
shows that the parts are not available, but that there are some private arrangements. You'd have to get permission from both the arranger and the Shaw copyright holders to perform them, though.

Used the wrong key words, Ken.:) A quick search on "Shaw Schirmer" confirmed that Schirmer has the orchestral version for rent but, as I recall, it ain't cheap. Check their website.

I have rented the Schirmer orchestral accompaniment and I believe the cost was $150.00 for six weeks use and one performance. It is worth the $ if you have a symphony to play it with.
John Bruce-Yeh used the original jazz ensemble arrangement from the Artie Shaw Orchestra book for his CD recording with the Vandercook College Jazz ensemble. Jonathon Cohler also mentioned an upcoming performance and using the original Shaw arrangement, but I havn't seen anything on CD as yet. Other's have had special arragement done privately--like the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee Wind Ensemble with Professor Jack Snavely as soloist--but they are not willing to "share" (I already asked).

There are a host of copycat arrangements and lifts out there; some outstanding with many living in military bands, a few colleges. Most won't share either but unfortuntely, not for ethical reasons rather c.y.a. Always, best to honor composer and publisher and take the high road. $150.00 for one performance is tolerable. However, at that fee I'd try to talk them into 1 or 2 more nights and a perusal score ahead of time. Another option might be the Gould Derivations at about $350 with 4 or 5 performances; at least that's what it was a year ago when my group rented it. A little more mileage from a hard-swinging commercial piece in it's own right plus mvts. v/r Ken
