Disclaimer: Please accept my apologies if this post is "not up" to my "usual standards." It is indeed a sad day when a poster does not perform to their usual standards, although we can aim for the high bar of perfection. However, we are only human.
The question: After a recent performance, I found myself coming back to numbers that the audience particularly liked and responded to. These pieces however, were not my personal favorites. Now, practicing for the next gig, I'm emphasizing pieces similar to ones the previous audiences responded enthusiastically to. Have others had this experience? Should I practice more what I love?

Aw, Mark... GBK = superhuman? (I never would have guessed! ) Besides being only human most of us who hang around here are on good terms too, more or less... well, maybe we snarl a bit but we don't seriously bite. In all sincerety though, I don't doubt that GBK is undoubtedly nearer the high peak than the majority of us.
GBK, are you talking about playing solo performances, rather than as part of an ensemble? I believe a soloist would have a little more say than a member of a group. Whether to please the 'crowd' or yourself is a hard call. Preferably, in a perfect world, you could do both.
By way of contributing an awkward answer:
Personally, many, many years ago, playing long-term lounge gigs and such, I found myself often bending more to the audience's wishes than what I preferred to play. In that situation, you play what the customers like and the club manager likes renewing your contract. While not the major reason, it was a strongly contributing reason I decided not to persue music as a 'business'.

How we change after a performance...
I start with the velcro straps, and step out of the used ones...

unless you the BB owner but then it's his right to do so, regardless of whether it's fair or not.
Besides - with out we mere posters - this BB wouldn't be happenin.

I change drastically.........into shorts and a t shirt.
Seriously, I hated ten takes of Hang on Sloopy, but that is what they wanted. In classical, I would die if I had to do Schoenberg a million times. In real life, most of us do things that are90% drudgery.
