 Mouthpiece Search
Author: frostslash

I'm a Sr High School student. I've been playing for about 4 years and am now contemplating getting a new mouthpiece. I don't really know what kind to get. My teacher doesn't know very much about mouthpieces, since she is predominently a flutist. I've been looking at the Pomarico crystal mouthpieces and I'm thinking that a ruby or sapphire would work best for me. Any advice?

I never cared much for the crystal mpc. I play a Gennussa and think it is one of the best out there. Shop around. There are lots of good mouthpieces out there that you can try.

Walter Grabner, Greg Smith, Richard Hawkins, Clark Fobes all make excellent hand-finished Mouthpieces. They maybe a little on the exspensive side but they are well worth the money. I have a walter Grabner mouthpiece right now and I love it. His mouthpieces are the cheapest out of the ones I listed. Good Luck- Corey

I have a pomarico sapphire it does play and sound good. these are hand finished and can very a bit. also crystal is very fragile!!! I really like morgan try rm-10 of rm-15, I like portnoy BP02 plays nice,
The big thing I have found is your emboucher is set to what you are use to playing on. subitle changes can yield good results right away but big changes take a while to get use to. As far as I can tell the best thing to do is get a well made medium mouthpiece in good playing condition then practice and find reeds that work.

Here's some questions that will help us help you:

- What mpc do you currently play on?
- Are you looking for something w/ more or less resistance?
- Do you prefer using harder or softer reeds? (Or, what reed strength do you prefer using?)

I will have to say try out a Selmer HS**. Test all the ones in the store and you will probably agree with me. It took me a whole box of mouthpieces till I found that one.

The real key to a mouthpiece search is knowing the sound you want, and then of course discovering the means of achieving it.

Many have spent too much time looking for a Perfect Kaspar that doesn't exist
.instead of finding the most reliable way of producing the best and finest result..

.these are areas where a good teacher and your ear should guide you in....sound is a very personal area ,and ,therefore you are the one who has to live with the idea that suits you best in terms of the tone you want to produce....

mouthpiece mania has deystroyed many a clarinet player!!!

Frostshash, listed to what David says. I don't remember how many times this year we have gone over this same thread. Please review past data. How much money do you wish to throw away? How big is your shelf storage capability? So, sit back, throw money at it and regret your decisions!

So how does the M30 really differ from the M13 and M15 in playing characteristics???

CPW,
Vandoren for the most part designed the M30 (it is more open than the M13 and M15) to sound like the B40 but, using harder reeds.

As Guy Desplus and Bernard Vandoren designed the b45, so Jon Manasse and probably Jean Paul Gauvin worked on the M30.

The B40 is the brainchild of Jean Paul Guavin the head of mouthpiece design at Vandoren.
