I'm sure many of you have heard that bananas help ease nerves and lessen anxiety. I usually eat a ton of bananas before try outs and competition. But that is sometimes hard to do. Does anyone know what the vitamin or whatever is in bananas that are effective for calming nerves? This way, I can just go and buy the vitamin supplement instead of cramming a dozen bananas down my throat right before a performance. THANKS!

Hello Meredith, I have seen other people writing about the calming effect of bananas but I've never heard of this before. I do know that some of the medical/nutrition research being done on vitamins and food is uncertain as to the benefit of the pill form alone. There are probably variables in the food inself that are beneficial that don't translate into a pill. Nobody knows for sure yet.

Bannannannannas are know for their potassium....whether or not this is the chemical/vitamin/mineral that is needed, I do not know. You might also find out that it is more phsychological than an actual chemical inballance. I could just be something stress exercizes could help.
I do know that during hot weather, I usually (now days) eat a couple during my lunch break with lunch, to help with heat intollerance.
good luck
Mike

Can you give me a medical reference for that? Thanks.

Don't forget to brush your teeth after eating all those bananas before you start to play!

Hi-
I've just been lurking so far but here's my 2 cents....
I've heard that it is the beta blockers in bananas that give the calming effect. I haven't read up on this, but from what I heard, the beta blockers stop adrenaline from rushing when you get nervous. Not sure if this has anything to do with potassium???
Beta blockers are available for purchase in much higher doses than what you'll find in a banana, so be careful!

Whether you are going bananas over bananas, or whether you are hungry vs. being nervous, there are lots of factors to consider to make sure you are performing at your peak when you need to.
Bananas are a starchy "fruit". Most diabetics have to count them as a starch food instead of a fruit if they are too big. Yes, there is a good level of potassium and lots of other goodies in your everyday banana. However, having a good, well balanced meal a short while before your performance (followed by flossing and brushing your teeth, of course) would probably do you more good than loading up on bananas alone.
The trick is to be comfortable and ready for your performance. True, you can't turn off all of your nerves. Nor should you. Concentrate on the task at hand. Immerse yourself in it. Find places to kick back and relax in it, too.

I asked my teacher, who says the magic ingredient in bananas is magnesium (also found in chocolate). Waverley Root's Dictionary of Food says bananas also contain a great deal of phosphorus, "the salt of the intelligence."

Mark,
I'll ask my MD next time I see him. I do know from family experience that magnesium is sometimes prescribed for tiredness, after an illness for example, so that would be the opposite of a calming effect, no? As for potassium, fish have a lot of it, and my wise grandmother always used to tell me to eat up my cod because it would be good for my brains. But you are right to ask for a medical reference. Isn't there a clarinet-playing doctor in the house?
