Just keep some downward (away from the screw) pressure on the plate while turning the screw. The plate should pop off easily.

I have a optimum for sax. I am sure they work the same.
Open it all the way softly, then hold it upright(logo rightside up). Lightly push with your thumb on the bottom of the changable plate while closing it.
If it doesnt work open again, and push a little harder.
I had the same trouble. After I deciphered the instructions it pretty much fell out effortlessly.
Putting a plate on is about the same, keep the plate tilted while closing, and a little push.

when you want to put the plate on unscrew the screw all the way and push the plate towards it as you tighten.

if you want to take it off(this is what i do) push the bottom edge of the plate(from the front) and it should just pop right off the screw when you loosen it.

you'll get the hang of it and once you do you'll see that it's an amazing ligature.

Why waste the money on the Optimum? Just get a Bonade with the two rails and save some money.

I kinda wish I didnt waste money on it. I also have rovner dark for clarinet and a light for a sax. They both work on any mouthpiece I use. Vandoren ligs only work with Vandoren MPs and a few others. I can use my sax lig on my clarinet and my clarinet lig on my sax. They fit all the MPs I have perfectly. Wish I woulda bought the 2 Rovners before the Optimum. 2 rovners cheaper than 1 optimum too.

"Why waste the money on the Optimum? Just get a Bonade with the two rails....... "

I agree that the inverted Bonade is a great ligature, but with the Optimum lig with its parallel rail insert, I get the same "Bonade" performance without the constant readjustment hassel. The Optimum holds its shape--the Bonade does not.

"Vandoren ligs only work with Vandoren MPs "

Sorry, not true. My VD Optimum fits perfectly on all of my current use mpcs which include a Chicago Kaspar, an Ithica Bay and a Gregory Smith "Cicero Kaspar' model.

And, for the record, I do not like the Rovner lig.

shouldnt cut my sentence short.

And my optimum is for sax, sax MPs tend to be more varying in size and shapes.

Opps, Funky--my stupid mistake. Haste (in reading postings) indeed makes waste. Sorry.

But I think it prudent to relate, further, that I have not found any mpc on which the VD Optimum does not work as well as the Bonades. Which mpcs do you have difficulties with?? Curious..............

Besides my Vandoren MPs the only other MP it fits is a bilgermorgan. I have quite a few others that dont even come close(berglarsen, selmer,a few noname customs ). The rovner dark for clarinet fits all my sax and clarinet MPs perfect. Also my sax rovner light fits all MPs for both instruments too.

Re: what mouthpieces can use Optimums..... I have three Optimums, for Selmers (clarinet, alto, and tenor sax). The only mouthpiece the Optimum does not fit well is the tenor sax because I use an anonymous mouthpiece, which I am fond of, instead of Selmer's original equipment. Some metal tape added to the sides of mouthpiece X to take up the slack solved the problem without adverse effects on performance.

Funkymunky - I am curious, which Selmer mouthpiece can you not get it to fit?
