 Artie Shaw: 93 years old.
Author: Mike Blinn
Date:   2003-05-25 01:12

I noticed in yesterday's Hartford Courant that Artie Shaw was celebrating his 93rd birthday.

There may be some clarinetists out there who don't know who Artie is, or what he means to us. If so, do yourself a favor and discover the wonderful player he was when he and Benny Goodman competed for the title of best jazz clarinetist in the world.

My favorite recordings are the last ones he made, in 1954. He retired from clarinet playing soon after.

Happy Birthday, Artie.

This may be the 2nd time I've bragged about finding 3 of A S's later 33 records, mint condition, no less, at an ill=attended estate sale, !! 10 CENTS each !! I taped them off for auto use, they are out for CD copying now, all who hear are much impressed. The Begin the Begoon, however is slightly diff from the old 78, still have it memorized!! Hope Artie still likes the girls! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

That link is very inciting. He speaks with a remarkable passion and understanding and also comfort - almost a complete justification of himself.

I used to imagine how amazing Artie would be if he still played today, but as he said it would kill him, it must be a good thing that he stopped.

I've read one of his books "I love you, I hate you, drop dead". Really interesting stuff. I really want to read his other books now.

Artie's great, always will be, but he put away his clarinet years ago.
Now there's Al Gallodoro who will be 90!! in June, that's legendary.
Check out his discography, his biography, and his CURRENT playing schedule! At: http://www.algallodoro.com

Re: Al Gallodoro

Ralph Martino's duet book "12 Duets For Al Gallodoro" is loads of fun to play. Eventhough #1-11 are duets for alto saxes, and #12 is specifically for clarinets, they almost all work as clarinet duets (except for #9 which ascends to E7 !!)
