My opinion - All swabs, most especially silk should be hand washed and air dried if possible. Woolite or other special detergent (I use a Quilters anionic detergent for delicate fabrics) will not leave any residue if rinsed thoroughly in cool water. I wash my swabs once a month just as routine - it depends on how much you play of course but time as well as use would suggest about monthly. Do not use a fabric softener because they contain chemicals that are not especially wood or rubber friendly. The softness should be in the fabric of the swab and not subsequent treatments.

I sometimes wash my swab in the washing machine w/ just a little bit of dishwashing detergent and NO softener, then I let it air dry. Seems to be working fine, and it's a lot faster than trying to wash it by hand and make sure all the soap comes out. I've never found soap residues on my swab this way, but you really have to watch the amount of detergent you use.

(Yes, I know soap and detergent are not the same thing, but I used "soap" for "detergent" a few times up there.)

First,
NO softener, even if it is in the detergent.
It prevents the absorbtion of water.
you may notice that your towls do not
dry you as well if they are "soft"

Second,
Air dry.

Third,
your spouse will thank you for not stinking
up the house with that stinky rag.

cheers!
