 clarinet and guitar duos
Author: kenabbott

I just discovered that a co-worker of mine is a serious classical guitar player. Can anyone recommend any duos?

Ken,

Jerry Kirkbridge has arranged a Schubert Arpegione (sp?) sonata for Bb clarinet and guitar, an International publication, I believe.

I bought it off of e-bay about ten months ago, gave the music to my brother in law who plays classical guitar over Christmas, but we have yet to work on it. If memory serves me correctly, some of the key signatures for clarinet are REALLY tough.

I don't know if anyone else out there has actually performed the piece, but hey, it's Schubert, great music I'm sure.

Regards,

Brian Peterson

I think Dieter Klocher (sp?) has a CD out with this arrangement. I used to have it but it was stolen. I remember a nice piece by, I think Donetzetti for Guitar and C clarinet. It seems like you could play it on B flat and transpose.

I played Ravel's Habanera (okay, I was a Spanish major and I don't have the French title at hand) with a classical guitarist. It was great fun, but it was arranged by a local guitarist. Anybody know if there is a published arrangement for clarinet and guitar?

I've got the CD which Dave mentioned. It's called "Virtuoso Music for Clarinet and Guitar" and it's one of my favourite CD at the moment.

Dieter Klöcker and Sonja Prunnbauer are playing works by Donizetti (Serenade), Pleyel (Sonatinas, for Clarinet in C), Heinrich Neumann (Theme with Variations on "Sehnsuchtswalzer" by Franz Schubert; Theme and Variations on "Nel cor piu non mi sento", both for Clarinet in A), Ivan Müller (Serenade) and Mauro Giuliani (Sonata, for Clarinet in C).

The label is MDG (Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm) 301 0319-2K.

Ken, I'm sorry but I can't help you as I bought it in Switzerland.
I only found out that KOCH International, 2 Tri-Harbor Court,
Port Washington, NY 11050-4617 is the distributor for MDG in the USA. Maybe they can help you, although I couldn't find the recording in their catalogue.

I think the Kloecker disk is out of print. I've been looking for that for a while and have only been getting a "can't find it" in the shops . MDG often reissues recordings, so it may be available again sometime soon (there are two "out of print" listings at Amazon.de for the same recording with different release dates and ASIN numbers).

Luigi Magistrelli has recorded (Heinrich) "Neumann - Six Serenades for Clarinet and Guitar" (Label: Bayer, Number: BR100280, ASIN: B000025YCK ), which is still available. I' recently ordered it (still waiting), but have only heard the preview snips via RealPlayer.

The "Duo Macchia" in Switzerland (Gerrit Boeschoten & Daniel Jaun) have a Neumann "Serenade for Basset Horn and Guitar" and other bh/gt duos in RealPlayer format at their website:
Duo Macchia
but I have not been able to locate any commercial recordings of the Duo. (The Black arrows are for Stereo the Grey arrows are for Mono).

I'm surprised Peter Schikele's, "Windows" for Bb/A and classical guitar hasn't been cited. several short, pleasingly mvts suitable in most any setting ... quick and painless to prepare too. v/r Ken

The Charlton, "Caprice" is great fun and sounds like music from the movie, "Charade" to me. (Charlton is probably best known for his works for recorder.) The "Caprice," along with Schickele's "Windows" (I will second this recommendation) and Pfister's "Ballade" for the same combination have been recorded by Diane Lang Bryan on a Protone LP. If you can find it, grab it -- marvelous clarinet playing.

Best regards,
jnk

Jack, you're psychic. I was going to mention Ms. Lang's LP ... both the Caprice and Ballade are lovely pieces. I remember being so taken by her playing and repertoire selection I phoned her in California to congratulate her on a fine session and get the music for both duos. Although 1989, she said both weren't published and the ink wasn't even yet dry ... I might also ad a genuinely humble and charming lady to speak with. Unfortunately, I never really tracked the charts down or seen that album re-issued on CD. I second the motion and highly recommend the Ballade and Caprice. The "Windows" I'm sure is still readily available as well. v/r Ken

Sheet Music Plus lists the Charlton and Pfister in its catalog. They do not have "Windows" for clarinet and guitar but do have it in a viola/guitar arrangement. Among their listings are also two works by Heinrich Neumann 1792-1861), a "Swiss Serenade" and "Variations." These have been recorded (with other Neumann works for the clarinet or bassetthorn and guitar) by Luigi Magistrelli on Bayer BR 100 280 CD. These are also very nice pieces. In their typical infuriating way, however, SM+ gives almost no information about their product. They show two versions of the Swiss Serenade. One may be for C clarinet (as used by Magistrelli on the recording) and the other a Bb version but SM+ doesn't say. In fact, the only difference they note between the two versions is the product number.

Best regards,
jn

It would be good for his career if he did. Rather, it might be bad for his career if he didn't.

I believe there is some clarinet/guitar music on the sibeliusmusic web site. You can print it directly from the site.

Wouldn't that be considered musical harrassment? :)

Have you thought about commissioning some compositions (needn't be particularly "atonal or minimalist")?
