You can certainly pick up a clarinet for far less $$ after it has a repaired crack. I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy an older clarinet with a repaired crack providing: 1) I like the way it played; and 2) I got a substantial discount off the normal resale value of that model.

A properly repaired cracked instrument (the operative word is "properly") can play as well as a clarinet that was never cracked. Choose your repair person wisely.

However, a cracked instrument (no matter how well repaired) will never sell for as much as one that was uncracked. Most buyers have an aversion to cracked instruments, thus the lower resale price.

It is common to see cracked instruments sell for 40% less than the equivalent uncracked used instrument, so good deals can be found. Pay to have any potential purchase carefully examined by a technician. It will be money well spent.

Personally, I favor the older Buffets, as I think the wood was aged longer, and is of higher quality than today's new instruments. All of my Buffets (I have 11 R-13's) were made before 1986. No cracks to report...GBK
