 The Pierre Monteux School
Author: clarinet713

Hello

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the Pierre Monteux School. I was just looking for some opinions on the school, the facilities, the orchestra, and the general environment of the place. Thank you!

it's a wonderful, intensive program. some world-renowned conductors have studied there. Off the top of my head, there's Laurin Mazel, Leon Fleisher, Sir Neville Mariner, David Zinman, Erick Kunzel, Andre Previn, Richard Hoenich...many, many others.

u can either live on campus or rent a home....but the area is beautifuol.

pierre monteaux was former conductor of the Boston, San Francisco and London Symphony Orchestras. he premiered stuff lilek daphnis and chloe and the rite of spring

Monteux is a good place to get experience reading and performing a lot of repertoire. You must play under student conductors entirely. Basically you and the orchestra are filling the role of the accompanist in a private lesson. But (at least a few years ago) it doesn't cost anything to go. Hancock, Maine is a small town and is not far from Bar Harbour (which is beautiful). Some students stay in cabins sharing rooms, others with cars typically stay in hosts' houses and get their own rooms. I wouldn't reccommend it over a festival like TMC or NRO or NOI but it's better than sitting around doing nothing all summer.
Good Luck,
Meighan
