Lately, I have been practicing more and this year I joined a more advanced music group. I've found that the faster pace and more of a challenge, along with the required additional practice time helps me improve a lot! I think I might be overpracticing lately a bit, because my lip is hurting a bit, so I'm giving it a rest for a day or so. I don't plan to major in music or anything...it's just something I love. Do others feel like a challenge makes you play better?
Oh...and for a bit of humor, I bought a box of reeds the other day, and realized when I got home that they were ALTO clarinet reeds! Lol...Luckily I took them back and had them exchanged, and now they're working great. Next time I guess I will blatantly state that I want "Bb soprano clarinet" reeds. Hehe.

Oh...the background that I forgot to mention was that a while ago I was feeling very frustrated...like I wasn't going anywhere. Every time I played, it was like a dissappointment to myself. But I've worked harder and also worked on havin a more positive attitude, and now I enjoy my music again!

Heh. My only reccomendation is don't practice until your lips bleed, and I'm not talking about chappedness and stuff, I mean, until you bite so hard into your lip the INSIDE of your mouth bleeds.
I did that in 7th grade, practicing about 2 hours after school in the bandroom, and then three when I got home. Dont' do it. It's just generally a bad idea.

Jen,
I found that out the hard way too. I was used to practicing my clarinet about 3 hours a day, spread out throughout the day, about an hour at a time. I was doing fine, until I picked up the tenor sax as well. Then I was practicing my clarinet for three hours and the sax for one or two... You can imagine the kind of pain my mouth experienced. Easing of a bit on the sax helped everything out a lot.

Yep. I know that story. Playing Eefer does nasty things to your embochure though. o_O; I'm beginning to play notes I didn't even know existed on Bb clarinet, almost like I'm biting the reed through my lip. I'm writing this as I'm tkaing abreak from PRing the allstate stuff for this year.. (and auditions for Symph. band.) I then proceeded to slack and play Bari Sax in jazz band, which was great fun. (We had like.. half the section not on their primary instruments. Flute and Clarinet on Bari-Sax, Two clarinets on Alto, A clarinet, a bassoon and an oboe on Tenor.. a clarinet on trumpet, a flute on piano... ect ect. It was crazy! )
