 Buffet Crampton Age
Author: Avie
Date:   2003-05-22 20:20

I own a Buffet Crampton. The serial number "F103599" is not listed in the serial number index. It has "super Dynaction" written on the top joint just beneath "Buffet Crampton" and "made in france". I thought maybe it was made between 1964 and 1966 because of the number and because the years were not listed for whatever reason. It has a beautiful tone in my opinion and in good playing condition. I would appreciate any info that the BB could offer about the instrument. Thanks.

*F* is not a part of serial number. It shows that clarinet was made for European market and pitched 442-444HZ. Enter serial number without F.

Mine is a BC20 F110xxx, made in 1969, so your maybe 1968 or 1969

I checked the Buffet serial numbers without the "F" and it is listed in year 1967 so it is more recent than I thought. I appreciate your replys. I am also wondering what "BC20" stands for and also what is meant by my "Super Dynaction". Also, if the higher pitch would make a differance and when choosing a new mp. Thanks.

Super Dynaction was a marketing logo first used in the 1950's with Buffet saxophones, to compete at that time with the Selmer Balanced Action saxes...GBK

The Super Dynaction was a limited edition jazz-oriented clarinet (according to Francois Kloc). You may find that the register key vent is placed higher than on an R13. I find it necessary to pull out at both the middle joint and at the barrel to adequately tune my '74 Super Dynaction. It is a very nice clarinet, but one about which little is known. You might check the degree of undercutting compared to an R13; there may be quite a bit less undercutting.

If you are not also a sax player, you may not realize that the term Super Dynaction is borrowed from a famous line of saxes manufactured by Buffet. I think they quit production of them in around 1974. They were, and are, very highly regarded. No doubt Buffet sought to associate their jazz clarinet with their well-known saxes.

The BC20 is a professional Buffet model. Its production was stopped when the RC was launched.

Avumba, out of curiosity, what kind of mouthpiece do you play on yours and how does it tune. As I've said, mine wants to be sharp (of course!), and requires adjustment at both barrel and middle joints. After that, it's pretty good.

Fred, I was playing my super dynaction with a selmer H** mp and I have just aquired a vandoren 5rv lyre13 mp last week over a B45 and a 5rv. I am using a #3 michael Lurie reed. I am also breaking in a #4 vandoren but it blows harder. the lyre13 mp speaks much easier and is less sharp than my H**. I get a few squeaks now and then but its probably because i am able to attempt more techniquely and in time will improve with it. I will experiment with the barrel and joint adjustments also. My BC barrel measures 2.562 lg. and my upper joint bore i.d. measures .585- 588 dia. I thought of trying a 68mm lg barrel but woud like to experiment with differant length barrel rings to test which length would be the most effective. the tone seems to be improving little by little to my limited ear. Im not sure how much is the player. I am curious to know what kind of mp you are using and your barrel length and upper joint i.d. I never noticed that my register key vent is higher than on my selmer. Im not sure what differance it will make. Thanks.....ATV

I took another measurement of my Buffet clarinet bore i.d. The top end of the upper joint i.d. measures .587 and the upper joint lower end i.d measures .570 +/- .003. I guess that means it is polycylindrical or revearse conical. The bottom end of the lower joint flares out to approx .775 i.d. ( a radius). Is this common in other Buffets or unique to my instrument? Any ideas will be appreciated? Thanks.

flared bottom joint is typical of the french clarinet. The german clarinets are cylindrical up to the end. There are acoustical properties concerning flared (or not) flared bore.
See this link from Stephen Fox to enlight it:

More information is needed. Pictures and the full serial number would probably help.

During the summer of ‘68, I studied with Mitchell Lurie, and he recommended the F series “A” clarinet, which he owned. He didn’t like the Bbs, saying that the sound was too small.

I have an E&S serial number list that begins with K3988 in 1952. All Buffet-made E&S clarinets after that date (and, presumably, for some time before) had a K prefix. So, an F-series, if one exists and was made by Buffet, would predate 1952.

Best regards,
jnk
