I recently saw somewhere a picture of a clarinet with some kind of plastic covers over the tenon corks. One of the main factors in degrading case linings is cork grease so tenon cork covers seem like a good idea. I have searched "everywhere" for something to utilize for or to make such protectors from but come up empty handed. Anyone know where to purchase such covers ?

I do not use them, and do not know who makes them but why not get some of the plastic caps that protect the threads on threaded pieces of cast iron pipe used for gas lines, etc. that are sold in all the hardware stores? - they are about the right length.

I have seen several oboes with cork-covers, maybe oboists are more fastidious [believe thats the word]. They last until they're lost! You might find pipe-ends, as Doc says, that would fit, or make your own fron cardboard and tape!! Don

Other possibilities I've seen, but not personally used:
Cut the bottom 1/3 of a plastic 35mm film container.
or
Cut the top 1/3 of an old plastic mouthpiece cap (experiment to see if a clarinet or alto sax cap gives a better fit).
or
As previously suggested, fashion a ring out of heavy construction paper (or cardboard) and tape ...GBK

Get some ABS or acetyl rod, and somebody with a lathe, and make them. Pretty quick really, considering the time you have devoted to it so far.

I believe i have seen some in the repair parts catalouges in the music store where i work, American Music. Ill give it a check next week and ill report back!

Of course, apart (hopefully) from the mouthpiece, they'll be different sizes for different makes/modeels of clarinet. There is nothing standard about those diameters.

But remember they do make them oversize on the oboe so they just slip over, so with the small differences between makes it shouldn't matter. Gordon (NZ) wrote:

The ones that don't grip at all are a real nuisance, the way they slip off so easily and fall on the floor (from a repairer's perspective). Some are really tight, and I have increased the inside diameter so that a child can actually get them off.

Gotcha Gordon. Maybe some out of blackwood with screw-on caps. But I was hoping to find some relatively inexpensive plastic ones for sale. Closest I've come yet is plastic chair leg end caps.
