I am interested in confirming the age of my clarinet. I own a Master Model Evette and Schaeffer, Modele Buffet Crampon, serial number 54568. Previous searches indicate records of manufacture for this instrument are limited, at best. All of the records I found suggest that it was manufactured between 1940-57. Quite a spread. Does anybody have any suggestions for a more accurate record/index? Thanks for your help.

That age is for Buffet clarinets; you have an E & S, and the serial numbers are different.
However, I don't know of a good list of E & S serial numbers.

Denny G,
I have the same clarinet and the s/n is K45xx. I did get an answer back from Buffet that this was manufactured in 1952. Hope this helps. Is your s/n really five numbers?

I also have a MM E&S. I bought it in ~1980, at which point the former owner told me it was ~25 years old. That would place it at ~1955, and the serial number is K24XXX (yes, five digits). This would seem to fit with your data and with Jim's.
BTW, Anyone know what the "K" in front of my serial number means?

The "K" either means that the clarinet is Kosher, or that it has been approved by the Dan Leeson Society for performance of the Mozart clarinet concerto.
(posted 'tongue-in-cheek', instead of on a clarinet reed where it belongs)

LOL, David. That makes me wonder whether/which bore oils and cork greases are Kosher. Doc?

If you want Kosher I can do that (for a small donation to JRF) - a good friend is a rabbi and a premier sax player (he is another sax player that owes me money - sorry an old joke).

My clarinet's serial number does not have a K in it. It is 54568, as posted above. The label reads: "Master Model" above the label's oval and along its contour. Within the oval is: "Evette & Schaeffer Paris France" Beneath the oval label and along its contour it reads: "Modele Buffet Crampon". And I am still searching for a serial number index that will help me age this horn. Any ideas/suggestions?
