 broadening my musical horizons
Author: wjk
Date:   2003-05-15 16:41

I apologize in advance if this is an "esoteric" topic (though many of the brilliant BB members seem to respond in a wonderful way to "esoteric" posts)--- I have been listening extensively to chamber music---and have an "itch" to attempt to play violin and/or cello. Have any other clarinetists attempted to "broaden their musical horizons" in a similar way? How hard would it be for me (a clarinet and guitar player) to attempt cello/violin?
Thanks!

I don't think your thought is esoteric at all. If the itch is strong enough, I believe you should go for it. One is never too old to learn new things. However, my own experience runs somewhat counter to this. I started as a 6-year old on the violin (1/4 size!). After two years I gave up in utter frustration and switched to sax and clarinet, and never looked back. Now, after 60 more years and after a long hiatus, I am an active sax and clarinet player again and I'm enjoying it tremendously. I never felt any nostalgia toward the violin but I'm sure that this is a very personal thing and should have no effect on your decision whatsoever.
Just my $0.02 worth.

I also felt the need to broaden my musical horizons recently. So I took up the A clarinet. It was like experiencing an entirely new world, even better than the time I got a burger with Colby cheese instead of cheddar. [grin]

If you can play the guitar, you might have a smooth transition into other stringed instruments. I tried the guitar at 19 -- got one of those cool lookin' how-to books with Eddie Van Halen on the cover and "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" inside -- and hit a wall after a few months, so I knew I needed to stick to winds. You don't have that limitation. So go for it.

We are all Clarinetists and Musicians. As a musician I am constantly looking for ways to expand my musical knowledge and experiences. This includes listening to music I would have never thought I would ever listen to. It also includes playing intruments that are pretty far off from the clarinet. Most recently I have started listening to Bluegrass and thouroughly enjoying it. I also have started teaching myself to play the Banjo! As Steve Martin once said "you can never be sad when playing the Banjo". It is pretty wild to think that I was playing Eb on Ravel's Concerto in G last night, and a few hours earlier strumming my Banjo.

So go for it. Music is a vast universe to explore, the only limitations are those we impose on ourselves.

I think it would be cool to learn the violin or cello! I've thought about it occasionally myself but don't have the time to practice anything more right now.

Sometimes we develop a narrow focus and "forget" that the art form we practice is music, and that the clarinet is just one of many paths toward exploring the art.

I began chorus singing about 35 years ago, and used that as my only musical outlet during my 18 year layoff from the clarinet.

You'll never know unless you try.

I used to play cello (not very well, but I did), and eventually was forced to pick one or the other, and I stuck to clarinet. I feel a little nostalgiac towards the cello and I do plan on taking it back up again one day when I get the time and $$$$. Go ahead. It'll help you become a better musician and you'll be able to appreciate violin music better now that you'll finally know what challenges there are in playing the violin.

Cellos are a lot of fun--really beautiful instruments. I'm taking it up again in addition to clarinet in this fall semester of college. I would recommend going with cello rather than violin because, as an adult, it can be pretty hard getting your fingers in the correct spot on a violin because the fingerboard is so thin and the strings so close together. On a cello you have more room and it is suited to an adult's hand (not that a violin isn't, but it is hard to do if you did not play as a child)

You will have some major wrist pains during your first few weeks of playing a bowed instrument, at least I did! I could not write for a week.

I play clarinet with my local cummunity band and I'm currently learning the Bass Guitar, after playing classical guitar for several years. so I can play rock n roll with my family. You never know until you try ! just go for it and find others to play with !.
