 Buffet E-12

I played clarinet about 20 years ago in my elementary school band. I haven't touched one since but that is because I never owned an instrument. While I played I always relied on a old student model Conn that the school provided. This past while I've been thinking about playing again and I have been keeping a not-so-sharp eye out for a used instrument. I have to admit that I am unfamiliar with the different clarinet makers so when I saw a Buffet E-12 at a used merchandise store (not specifically used instruments, I might add), I was attracted by the fact that it was wood instrument. The price was 119.00 CDN. I went back to work and checked on the Internet for information on this model. I was quite surprised at what I saw. I rushed back to the store and bought it. It is in immaculate shape - no cracks, bent/broken keys, the pads look perfect - and according to the serial # it is no more than 5 years old. My guess is that the person who traded it in knew as little about the instrument as the person who appraised it at the store. I've read reviews on this model by those who sell them but I would be really interested in hearing from other players on what they think of the E-12. Now all have to do is try to remember how to play.

A Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece was included as well as an older mouthpiece with Esprit written in script. Any suggestions on what the latter mp may be like in terms of quality?

I can't really comment on the material other than it "looks like plastic". The imprint of "Esprit" definitely looks "factory" but I may be wrong. The only possible conenction I can see is that Leblanc makes an Esprit model but it is extremely pricey. If so, I am not sure how such a mouthpiece ended up with my clarinet.

I have a new E12 myself. I bought it from the Woodwind and Brasswind for $900. In my opinion, it plays pretty well. The quality is a LOT better than the E11. My friend bought an E11 at the same time I bought mine, an the differences were obvious. The E11 keys were supposed to be silver as advertised, but were actually nickel. My E12's silver keys were very beautiful. Another friend of mine has an R13, but prefers to switch with me because she likes the way mine plays. This is pretty fine, because I want to play her R13!! Congratulations on your purchase. It sounds like a great deal! But what really count is how it plays. Take it to a shop where the tech can test it out w/ more experienced lips. Good luck!

Sounds like you got a great deal on this purchase. It is my guess that the 5RV is probably a better mouthpiece than the Esprit. Clarinet makers do great on the clarinets but only so-so on mouthpieces. That's why so many people buy independently made mouthpieces.
