I'm playing the 1st Fantasie by Georges Marty. It is dedicated to Rose. Does anyone have any more information about this piece or about Marty? BTW, it's a fun piece to play. The top of the piece also says "Concours de Conservatoire 1897." Does that mean it was composed in 1897 or was it first performed for contest in 1897?

Garret -
Have you tried Baker's or Grove? Your school reference librarian can also help.
A Google search on "Georges Marty" returned 154 hits. "George Marty" and Fantasie returned 7 hits, including a Clarinet Classics recording that should have what you need in the program notes. Many are in French, but Google has a translator good enough to let you figure out what they mean, or you can feed them to Babelfish http://babelfish.altavista.com/.
Most of the French Conservatoire contest pieces (including Debussy's Premiere Rapsodie) were composed for the occasion. The Marty piece was certainly performed in 1897. If it wasn't composed in that year, it was almost certainly from 1896. If you want to follow up, your reference librarian can find sources of information from the publisher and the French copyright office.
Best regards.

Ken's assumption about the date of the Marty piece is correct. It was both composed (dedicated to Cyrille Rose, Klosé's finest student) and performed in 1897.
Eugène Georges Marty, a student of Massenet, was mainly known as a choral conductor but composed numerous instrumental as well as vocal works.
I would check Groves for more information...GBK
