I have heard a recording of this piece on a cd by my previous teacher Paul Dean entitled "Ariels' Music" and absolutely love it. My first question is does anyone know of any other recordings of it? Secondly, in regard to the sheet music, I can't find it anywhere. To my knowledge it is our of print so do I have any other way of finding it? I am almost certain that Symphony Australia has the orchestral parts for hire, but there would be copyright laws against me getting a copy right? I'd need a piano reduction also... Any advice?

Based on Jack Brymer's assessment of the piece in his book, The Clarinet, I searched for a recording for many years and was very happy, to say the least, when a copy of Paul Dean's turned up on eBay a year or so ago. To me, the piece sounds like something from the soundtrack of a Hitchcock movie -- Vertigo comes to mind. Since I like that kind of music, I also like the Veale. Some might find it repetitious, however, and IMHO it doesn't rank with, e.g., Finzi's Concerto. However, also IMHO, it deserves to be heard once in awhile. I don't think there are any other recordings.
The work was dedicated to Sidney Fell. Oxford University Press is the publisher. There was a piano reduction. The copyright date is 1955 and, I suspect, the work is long out of print. You might try contacting Oxford University Press. Some publishers are willing to make a photostatic copy of an out-of-print work, if requested. Costs vary from publisher to publisher. They might also be willing to allow you permission to make a duplicate of Mr. Dean's copy, if that's an option.
Around 25 years ago, there was a copy in the music library at Washington University in St. Louis. It's probably still there. I didn't check the ICA library. Perhaps you can find a copy in an Australian library or through interlibrary loan.
Best regards,

One of the English players on the board (I'm embarrassed not to remember which) is a student of Sidney Fell and has a broadcast aircheck of Fell playing it. He very kindly sent me a copy. The sound is a little dim, but it's a fine performance of a fine piece.
Best regards.

Jack: I might try and contact Oxford and see what they have to say. I tried to get Paul Deans copy but he has somehow misplaced it. One of his other past students has a copy of the piano reduction from when he played it a few years back. The cl. part isn't transposed.
GBK: How does the ICA work? Do they loan? And would the copies they have be piano reduction or orchestral parts?
Thanks for the advice so far from everyone.
