Luigi Bassi succeeded Cavallini as principal clarinetist at La Scala.

More information on Luigi Bassi can be found in Pamela Weston's books...GBK

I would suggest listening to the opera itself to at least find out the story line, and where the various melodies come from.

Charles,

You didn't mention which recording you already have, but I can recommend you the "Clarinette à l'opéra" CD by Alessandro Carbonare. This is a Harmonia Mundi recording featuring various fantasies based on famous Italian operas, great CD!

Cheers,
Stéphane

Sorry that was silly of me, I have a recording by my teacher, Charles West.
Liguorice-good suggestion thanks, didn't consider doing that, and thank you Stéphane for the CD reccomendation, both are very much appreciated!

I know that Sabine Meyer has recorded the Bassi Rigoletto variations because I have heard her version on the radio several times.

Sabine definitely recorded it and it is featured in her CD "A night at the opera" (I think it is EMI). Her brother Wolfgang recorded the piece too in his CD dedicated to operatic pieces and fantasies.

Stéphane.
