 Multiphonics
Author: Alex Pritchard

I've searched everywhere on the web, and have yet to find anything more than hints of discussion on clarinet multiphonics. If anyone could go so far as to suggest some fingerings and their notes, I would be grateful, or even direct me to a web page that would actually have something useful...

You most probably won't find too much in the way of Web pages on multiphonics unless you write some ... but there are a number of books that have fingerings and instructions. Check Phillip Rehfeldt's "New Directions for Clarinets", listed in the Bibliography section, for a start.

"The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet" also has a small section on multiphonics, as well as fingerings and techniques for "super-altissimo" (my word, meaning above c''') and 1/4 tones.

Another way is to invent fingerings by ourselves since they are anyway invented by someones quite recently and there are no "authorized" fingereing books.

The principle of multiphonics is to make a few or several fake and true air columns and let them emit different fake or true tones. For example, emit low E closing all tone holes down to the bell and experiment one or two or three...holes open but closing still the very lower holes. It makes fake air columns and shorter true one.The instrument should be overblown to cover all pitches.

It would be helpful and interesting for Alex(perhaps) and me if someone knowlegeeeeeable could elaborate on this subject more concretely.

I don't know too much about multiphonics as a Bach-lover (no multies during that time, huh?) but if you really wanna know about them, send me an e-mail, I ask my teacher if you could e-mail him, he knows lots about this godforsaken stuff.
