I was just asked to fill in for a local orchestra on Eb that is playing Overture to Candide. I have a good quality Eb at my disposal, but I am not thrilled with my mouthpiece. I play on a Pyne Bb that I absolutely love. Has anybody tried the Pyne Eb mouthpiece? Any suggestions on a good quality Eb mouthpiece?
Also, I'm having trouble with the quick high-D to C graces for one of the solos. I've tried both the side D's as well as standard D without much success. Anybody got a good alternate fingering for the passage?

I have a Fobes which works great. Contact Clark, he is very helpful. He is a sponsor of this site.

My first choice is the standard fingering. Second would be the left forefinger Ab key as in a C to D trill. With Candide, you've got to be quick.
On my Bb I use a Chicago Kaspar #14. On effer, I use an old, vintage Selmer HS** with Bb reeds chopped off so they fit the lay. I am not a fan of the Pyne mpc.

Get Peter Hadcock's book on the E-flat - this is a tremendous resource for fingerings and repertoire.

Interesting, I just finished seven shows of Candide (the whole opera) on the Eb/Bb part last week. I used the RH trill key for the high D, but you can also try overblowing open G for the high D as well.

Depending on the Clarinet, you may wish to try using side key 2 (opened perhaps not all the way) instead of the speaker key and trilling with the left thumb. No guarantees, but it might work. Trilling the thumb while using the speaker key is not a swift move.
Good luck.

John

I use the RH trill key (2nd from top) with the ordinary high C for those grace-notes.
You don't say what model of Eb you're using, or what mouthpiece it is that you're not thrilled with. I've never had any trouble with a Selmer mouthpiece on a Selmer instrument. I wonder if the design of E flats is less standardised between different companies than on the B flat, making it preferable to stick to the same manufacturer.

You can also check Walter Grabner's site (linked from the Sponsors pages here). He is a player and makes Eb mouthpieces (as well as Bb soprano and bass).

The Hawkins mouthpieces have been the best mouthpieces i have ever tried consistantly for mouthpieces for Eb clarinet. If you are really looking for an exceptional moutpiece give him a ring.
