Can anyone tell me how to figure out if a Buffet is a R13, an E-11 or other model. I am considering bidding on an A Buffet currently on ebay. A serial number is provided and while there is information out there about what year the instrument was manufactured, I haven't found anything to relate the serial number to the model.
Thanks for any advice.

Difficult to tell from eBay pictures sometimes. Give a link if you can.
All current Buffets except the standard R-13 will have an engraving or a badge proclaiming the model (not sure of the standard RC has anything, perhaps someone can fill in here). Student and intermediate horns have the model engraved in the upper joint. The Vintage and Greenline R-13s also have additional engravings there. R-13 Prestige, RC Prestige and Festival have a silver badge on the upper joint.
Standard R-13 has no markings other than the Buffet logos. Look at the upper and lower joint sliver keys for a curved "swoopy" design on the key arms.
Prestige horns and the Festival have metal tenon caps and the additional left hand Ab/Eb lever.
This list is by no means complete, as I've only been a Buffet player for less than a year.f

The serial number alone won't do it. (All of the serial number lists I have seen are for Buffet "professional clarinets".)
For example, the R13 and B12 share some serial numbers. I went around and around with an Ebay seller who had a clarinet with no model number, a serial number that said it was an R13, and no picture.
I subsequently found out from the Boosey & Hawkes Web site that both the B12 and the R13 had that exact serial number. 1989 for the R13 and 1988 for the B12.
When I pressed, the seller was finally able to see a faint B12 marking on the top joint that they had never noticed before.
They never did mention that the clarinet was plastic and not wood.

Ralph,
I have a fairly new Buffet RC A Clarinet that does have the gold RC at the top, looks about the same as the standard R-13 badge, I think.

The Rc engraving often disappears when the gold wears of. It should still be distinguishable by looking close. Prestige models and Festivals have a medallion stuck to the body. Old S1 models have S1 engraved. The R13 is pretty well their standard model and does not have any marking. The RC looks much fatter to the naked eye. The reason for B12's having serial numbers that do not correspond to the Buffet lists is that they are made by Keilwerth/Schreiber and correspond to their lists.

The easiest way to tell R13 from any German made clarinet with the same logo is to look/ask for "Made in France" inscription just below the BC. German made clarinets doesn't have it.
