 Chicago - Teacher recommendations?
Author: ChicagoShari

Can anybody recommend an excellent Clarinet teacher located in Chicago, Illinois? I'm an amateur player looking for a serious professional to work on musicianship. I play in a community orchestra, and want to improve!

You could try any members of the Chicago symphony orchestra or from the local colleges ( like depaul which I think Larry Combs teaches there). Or, there are many teacher directories online that you could go to, I'm sure there are plenty of teachers listed in the Chicago area.

I really doubt that the CSO players really have much time to teacher these days. If you want though email me and I can give you list of superior teachers in the area.

Id reccomend contacting some of the DePaul faculty being at the heart of the city. Themselves are quite busy, but can and have been known to have connections to some great teachers. They helped me out, and hey it was a great start to get me ready for DePaul itself next year.

I recently attended a master class given by Susan Warner prior to a performance by The Prairie Winds (woodwind quintet). I was really impressed, and the program notes make reference to all members being dynamic teachers. I can't tell if she's currently teaching, or if they are focusing on touring. Check their web site http://www.prairiewinds.org/index.htm for contact info.

As an alternative source other than the great DePaul and the CSO guys (none better anywhere), you may wish to contact Prof Russel Dagon at Northwestern Univeristy for leads.

When Gregory Smith is not making mouthpieces, touring "down under" (and elsewhere) and gigging with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he gives lessons at his home in Evanston. If I were in the area and "in the market" for lessons, that is who I would call. (I would call Russ next, however)

As an afterthought--but by no means least--Walter Grabner (I think) gives lessons out of his home near Ravinia. At least, after hearing me play bass clarinet he offered me some lessons (probably thought I really needed major help) Although he is a bass clarinet specialist, his professional experiance would certainly qualify him for lessons on any clarinet. (plus, he makes good mpcs as well)

Hi :) My teacher was Jeff Midkiff when I went to Concordia U. in River Forest. He is an excellent teacher-- a GREAT person to work with. I believe he also gives private lessons on his own time in addition to those he gives through CURF. You can tell him you got his information from me (Lindsey Ondrey) if you want. If you would like his phone number, I am pretty sure I still have it in my folder. You can email me for it. floopy04 @ hotmail.com

As for the CSO players, those few I know have part time teaching positions in addition to their CSO work (and many others do other symphonies, etc. on the side). My percussion tech teacher plays timpani for the cso. He didn't have much extra time, though, from what I knew.

You might call NIU (Dekalb, IL) music department (or check their website or current clar Prof) and ask if they know where "Melvin Warner" is hiding out nowadays. Maybe type him into you browser and see what comes up ... he's a retired NIU Clar Prof. Someone here might chime in also with his current locale. I took lessons from him a year back in the early 80s and he's absolutely magnificent to say the least, every bit as good (IMO) as the celbrated best; myself, I made higher and faster strides in my playing with Mel in our shor time together than four years with Marcellus. He has the finest "natural" ability to teach and encourage results from students I've ever known.

Last I saw him was at the 2000 Clamfest in OK. He was still teaching then part time but I didn't think to ask where he was living and he didn't mention it. Even, if he's out in the sticks of Northern Illinois he's well worth the 4-hour round trip once/twice a month from Chicago, and I'd bet a weeks pay he'd be cheaper to study with than the CSO untouchables. v/r Ken

Oh, also ask around about "Charlene Zimmerman" too, she's a superb old time freelancer in Chicago. I believe I even remember seeing her name listed on the Sneezy complimentary teacher/professor/university page.

I have taken lessons from both and both are great teachers.

Char isn't a really an Old Time free lancer, she's now Principal Clarinet of the Lyric Opera of Chicago also Where susan warner recently won the 2nd clarinet spot.

Mel is still around living in dekalb. He also still teaches at NIU. It would probably be best to look up his studio number and contact him there. And it would be worth the round trip.
