 trill exercises

Hi all,
I was wondering if any of you knew any exercises that I could use to improve the speed and intonation when I trill. My pinkies are especially a problem,
Thanks!

Nicki -

There are some good trill exercises in the Langenus Method -- Part 3, I think, but maybe Part 2. The main thing is to stay relaxed as you do them. A trill doesn't have to be a blur, and most of the time it shouldn't be. It helps to practice trills in tempo at first -- really slow, as 8th notes, then as triplets, then 16ths. You need to be able to trill many different ways -- not just whatever you can do at the time, or as fast as you can go, but what suits the music and the mood you're trying to project.

Best regards.

I would have loved that information when I was doing the excerpt for Capriccio!:)

I swear...the trilling correctly is the hardest part and is what makes playing it sort of up to tempo nearly impossible for me!:)

ARGH!

Jeanjean Vade Mecum has exercises for all trills.
To increase speed, try holding the fingers that are down quite firm, stiffening the trilling finger and, instead of moving it up and down move the wrist, a bit like a violin vibrato. Try not to tense up the forearm too much.

I would disagree with Jez. You can get a faster trill by training the fingers to move from the knuckly. Do the Jeanjean every day!
