How do you keep from going flat above the high F# or so when playing Eb?

1. Make sure your reed is hard enough
2. Have enough mouthpiece in your mouth
3. Maintain enough pressure on the reed from your embouchure
4. Find sharper fingerings

Good points.

The words, "pressure on the reed" make me think of biting and I would think you don't mean that. Perhaps say, rather, "maintain a firm embouchure". I would also add,

5. Make sure you are supporting the air stream that is going through your clarinet.

The fingering for Eb that uses 2-3 and 5 fingering is always flat and should never be used.

Faster air speed.

Also, have a few of the alternate Eb fingerings learned (there are more than a dozen) for special circumstances...GBK

Suzanne are you talking about playing on an "effer" or on a Bb clarinet?

I didn't know you could even tune one of those things...

if you are talking abotu Eb Clarinet.. Try playing clarion Bb on the higher partial. On Bb clarinet it produces a sharp F sharp but on Eb it is pretty good.

I'm talking about the little guy--clarinet in Eb. In particular, I'm thinking of the Mahler 1 excerpt, altissimo F#-G#, is quite flat. I am using the fingerings from the Hadcock book. Can I ask, why would I necessarily need a harder reed? I don't need a harder reed when playing altissimo on the Bb clarinet.

I wouldn't worry. How many bats (with perfect pitch) are going to be in the audience?
