 Preparing for Practice
Author: Sue

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering how (and if !) everyone "clears their minds" ,so to speak, of all the daily stress and worries before starting to practice to help make the practice time more productive. Taking a walk, working out at the gym or whatever !.

I don't clear my mind before practicing.. When I get out my clarinet, everything else automatically takes a backseat. This can be good because if I'm having a stressful day, it relaxes me and helps me forget things for a while. However it could also be bad as I can easily lose track of time while practicing and could be late to appointments, however I set my cellphone alarm and when it goes off, it's close to finishing time.

Usually, practicing is what clears my mind of the other stuff of the day. I just totally get focused on the music.

As a stay-at-home mom with very limited time, my practice time is very "down and dirty" and focused on passage work, so I can get through my next orchestra or quintet gigs. BK (before kids, not Burger King) I found that my usual warmups (Klose scales, chromatics, long tones, even the occasional Beatles tune with CD accompaniment) also helped me release any stress that would interfere with practicing. Music is relaxing to me, so warming up helps me focus and release.

Happy Practicing!

I have a book called "The Art of Practicing." I forget the author's name. She advocates doing some yoga type stretches, including the hands before practicing. I do it when I have time, but often I don't. I agree with the other posters, that the practicing itself usually gets me focused.

I must echo Pam H. who says that practice is what clears the mind. In fact I get "cranky when I don't practice.

It is Caffeine in the morning (compression)
and clarinet in the evening. (decompression)
