Does anyone have experience with Selmer MP's and beyond. I was given an HS* that I forced myself to play but always felt that there was some unnecessary effort. Just switched to a B* and its as if the whole world opened up to me. Any comments????

I have a HS** , A Selmer that says Elkhart Newyork "3" , and 2 goldentones besides another box full. The HS** is by far the best mouthpiece I have, clear and reliable in all registers. The "3" is very smooth sounding and nice tone my second fav MP . The goldentones are suprisingly good sounding. One would almost equal my 5RVL if it wasnt so loud.
Yu should try different reeds if you are having problems with that HS* im sure it will sound good. When I started I played all different kinds of reeds in different sizes. After awhile I think I might have found the best in rico GCS. I still buy singles of different sizes.
I also suggest practicing on reeds way to hard play. I have played a 4 1/2 till I was sore. After not even a week of the torture. I play it like 2 and it sounds great. Today I just bought a single bluebox Vandoren 5. I was suprised i could even play it itsounded great. All that really hard reed practice made it easy. Then you can go back to 3 and 4 and they play like nothing and you wont even get tired.
Its the reed not the mouthpiece

I use a C85 120 most of the time. Very free blowing across all registers good intonation in the altissimo. I use a Soloist D alto mouthpiece also. I have found that Selmer's, especially on saxophone make very good lead mouthpieces. Volume is easy to produce. I can't find anything good to say about the HS or similar. I believe, but again I could be wrong, they were made for the 10S or 10G series and tend to blow very sharp. They are also prone to deterioration in the rubber itself and often smell like burning car tyres.

Donn, if you feel the HS* is a closed facing, why would one use a soft reed on it? Open tip mp= soft reed; closed tip mp+ harder reed.
