 After the Rose Etudes
Author: Micaela
Date:   2003-04-28 02:46

I've almost finished the big Hite book of the Rose studies (both sets and the caprices). What are other etudes that are commonly studied after Rose and what are they like? I think my teacher's going to give me Uhl next but I'm curious as to what else is around. By the way, is that pronounced "oool" or "yule"?

Thanks for reading,
Micaela

My teacher had me begin Cavallini.

Good luck with the Uhl studies. They are very challenging.

Stark, Jettel and Opperman are pretty much the next heavy stuff....

Also, by this time your copy of Baermann III should be permanently affixed to your music stand ...GBK

There are so many exciting places to go.

I think most of these I listed below, and use with students and with myself, have material that can successfully be utilized "after" Rose. There are differing levels of difficulty amongst and within these books. Ask your teacher for advice or take a look and pick and choose which etudes are appropriate.

You can always learn from them and keep them around for years.

Ernesto Cavallini - Thirty Caprices for the Clarinet

Agostino Gabucci - several studies of differing levels of difficulty
Breve Metodo per Clarinetto, 50 Piccolo Studi Progressivi
Venti Studi di Media Difficolta per Clarinette
21 Caprices

Vincenzo Gambaro - Vingt Caprices

Alamiro Giampieri - 6 Caprices
6 Fantastic Studies
12 Studi Moderni

Gaston Hamelin - Gammes et Exercices

Paul Jeanjean - many, many books of studies; they may be beyond you technically at this point, but something to look forward to...

Reginald Kell - 17 Staccato Studies for Clarinet
30 Interpretative Studies for Clarinet

Fritz Kroepsch - Etudes Progressives pour clarinette (4 volumes)

Gaetano Labanchi - studies

Jacques Lancelot - studies

Prosper Mimart - studies

Kalmen Opperman - Modern Daily Studies for the Clarinet (3 volumes)
Velocity Studies - 4 books
Master Studies

Auguste PĂ©rier - numerous books of various difficulty

Henri Sarlit - Etudes

Frederick Thurston - Clarinet Technique
Passage Studies (3 volumes)

Stark , several Studies and Exercises

Uhl should be pronounced "oool." They're neat...but I went back to them recently and found them less interesting than I did 15 years ago. However, whenever I return to the Rose studies and etudes, I almost always find something to work on! You're never really "done" with Rose! LOL!

Another good choice is Advanced Studies by Polatschek.

The Passage studies of Thurston are fine, as well as the richard strauss orchestral exerpts books.

I like "Quinze Etudes" which are 15 etudes derived from the Bach Violin Sonatas edited by Delecluse. The publisher is Leduc.

I agree with Katrina, one is never be "finished" with the Rose Etudes. Just like one can never be "finished" with Brahms. While going through them certainly gives a sense of accomplishment, when you return to them a year later, the growth in your playing really becomes evident.

The Uhl is a worthy challenge.

Good Luck
