Can someone suggest a recording of the Schubert Octet? Also, which recording of the Poulenc Clarinet Duet and Clarient/Bassoon piece is recommended?

Re: the Shubert, I have three versions. One is an old one by the Vienna Orchestra Octet, I don't remember the editing details (not my favourite), another one is by the Walter Boeykens ensemble (Harmonia Mundi) which is not bad, and the third one, definitely my favourite is by Mozzafiato & L'Archibudelli on period instruments with Charles Neidich on clarinet. This is a Sony Classical recording SMK 89632.

Stéphane.

I like all the Schubert recordings recommended above. The old Vienna Octet isn't technically perfect, but has a wonderful 'Schwung'.

The Academy of Ancient Music have done a fine recording on period instruments (Anthony Pay on clarinet).

Another wonderful recording is by the Gaudier Ensemble. They have fantastic blend and ensemble playing. Richard Hosford plays clarinet on this recording, and the other musicians are also all members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

RE: The Poulenc

Naxos have done a recording of the complete Poulenc Chamber Music. Check there website www.hnh.com. There are 5 cd's.

They feature the clarinet playing of the Belgian clarinettist Ronald van Spaendonck. I heard him do the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie at the BBC Proms and I really enjoy his playing - especially the Poulenc Sonata.

Hope this helps,
Rob

(Also heard him do the Nielsen on the radio - that was awesome!)

Leopold Wlach seems to have this music in his bones(MCA MILLENIUM CLASSICS )....another record is by Harold Wright with the Boston Chamber players. Both are awesome clarinet recordings.

The CD by Wlach and Vienna Conzerthaus members seems to be this
Schubert: Octet Universal Victor (MVCW19003) .

They have a series of re-mastered Westminster labels. I do not know
this is one of them. I do not like Schubert.

Agree. Spaendonck is an awesome player and very very young.
We will be hearing a lot of him in the future.
(however, in his recording of the Poulenc Sonata, his playing of the initial melody in the 2nd movement can be faulted - he breathis in audibly in the middle of the melody, which cuts it up and is quite unneccessary!)
