Hi,
I was just wondering ...................
Do you all only play classical music or does anyone else play "easy listening" stuff like "Something Stupid", "Amazing Grace", and pop tunes like "Tears in heaven", "My heart will go on" or is it just me ???

Our community band usually plays both at concerts, perhaps about a 3 to 2 ratio of "pops" to semi-classics, an occasional "full" classic, perhaps about 1 to 1 for church services! Broad definitions! Don

Groups I play in: a semi-professional orchestra, three concert bands, a wind ensemble, a Bavarian polka band (music is Bavarian, not the players), two swing bands and a jazz combo--all on a regular basis. Although my favority venue is orchestral, I like the diversity of musical styles that each group features and I draw musical energy from each in a cross catagorical sense. Being able to play a wide variety of styles helps musical expression and also helps maintain artist sanity. If all I had to play were polkas all the time, I'd go nuts!!!!

My weekly performing groups are very similar to William's, except that I choose not to do bands or wind ensembles.
It always makes me chuckle to think of the irony in bringing a carefully selected 30 year old R13, a hand picked barrel, vintage mouthpiece, ligature, reed, etc... just to play the "Chicken Dance."
Mom would have been proud...GBK

My repertoire does not include such things as "I don't think you're as stupid as a cow... If I did, I'd paint stripes on the driveway." But pops, jazz, other improvisational stuff, and the like are nice. I enjoy classical very much but play it very little.
Regards,
John

You make me laugh! What a great image!
And it's almost like what I do! I play with small folk/classical combos. We play mostly Balkan music for the folk stuff. I've just started a trio of violin, clarinet, and accordion, though, to read and perform "real" classical music...we've been working on Eine Kleine and the Kegelstatt trio among other eclectica!

I, too, enjoy variety as do many fellow BBers, Sue. I've played with 100-piece marching/concert band(s), symphony orchestra, dixie-type small groups, nightclub trio and country/western outfits and various just-for-the-fun-of-it gatherings ('ensembles', I guess you might call 'em, as Katrina says).
So... nope, it's not just you. You'll find lots of friends here

Eclectica, heck... I just stared playing a nifty "Romanze from Serenade" from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" arranged for 2 B flats, an Alto and Bass. I love it...and for the moderate of skill player...not difficult. It's a neat piece.
William - I got a kick out of your clarification that the players in your Bavarian ensemble aren't Bavarian.

ron_b: Two questions...
a.) I really don't understand your parenthetical comment...are you referring to my generally correct use of the apostrophe in "'em?" ;^)
b.) Clarinet in country/western? Please elaborate!

Hi, Kat
a.) I meant that you call musical groups "ensembles" - that's what I call (th)'em too. Yep, we got it right... I think :\
b.) Played tenor sax/clarinet, about half and half, in several home town type country/wester outfits. Lotsa songs sound good on clarinet wherever you play 'em [oh, yeaaaaah]....
Did you ever get that little "C" of yours up and running?

Well, no, I've not gotten my C up to MY standards...
I just don't have time to be learning the new horns I've acquired! As a result I haven't even looked on eBay lately (for clarinets; fiber art stuff is a different story!)...
I mean, last summer I picked up the C on eBay and then picked up the FB at WW&BW, and while I have repertoire I COULD learn on them, I've been so swamped I haven't had the time to learn those horns! I can't play either of them in tune to save my life! I guess it's just because my R13 and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary together this month...

I know what you mean, Katrina, (I think)... lots of interest, loads of appreciation, tons of patience -- but never enough TIME
