What do people think about Janet Hiltons recording of the Nielesn, Copland & Lutoslawski on Chandos?
I find the Nielsen to be incredibly fast but not really in the spirit of the piece.

Unfortunately, with Janet Hilton, I cannot get past #1 to focus on #2, #3, #4, or #5...GBK (who is well aware of Janet Hilton's popularity and world-wide reputation as a successful recording artist)

The sound certainly deters from my like of her playing. In spite of the techique its pretty rough.

The virtual female counterpart to Stoltzman "sound-wise" to my tastes ... generally, I never really was a big fan of the British approach to tone. I've got her mid-80s recording of the Nielsen and "to me" her tempos were also outrageously quick, the Copland was on that record too and yes, she barreled through the cadenza as well. I recall the first time I played it, I jumped back from my desk chair in fright and cried, "slow down Honey, speed doesn't always equal energy!"
Ms. Hilton is a magnificent player and time-tested industry talent, I have only the deepest respect and admiration for her career accomplishments; and from what I hear a superb teacher also.
Just curious speaking of old timers; what's Thea King been up to these days?

I have never heard a recording by this person. I would be interested in hearing from some British clarinet players on the subject, though.
What orchestras does she play in? Where does she teach? What competition did she win to get this recording contract?

If you go to the new releases link you can hear another short sound sample which may give a better understanding of some of the comments about her sound.
She's been around for quite some time as have some of her recordings.

I just went to the site and listened to the short clip of her playing and she didn't sound that bad but I've heard alot better.

I'm not familiar with the piece on that short cut; therefore, I'm not sure if that's what the piece calls for or if that's just her normal style.
I'm not a Stockhausen lover, and if all I ever heard from a player is a short selection from “Tierkreis” then I might not rate their sound very highly.

If you click on the Mozart CD you can hear a short sample of her recording of the Quintet. It's hard to tell from the quality of the clip, but her tone doesn't sound to bad to me. She could work on her legato though.
But then... it's really easy to sit back here and critisize!

I have it and don't like it either. Maybe her sound is contributed to by that what appears to be Rovner ligature (as seen on the front booklet).
The one good thing about the disc is it has 3 of the major clarinet works with orchestra. Nowadays we can hop on the web and download them (with favorite performers) and make our own! Am I right?
I can't be totally cruel, she is no spring chicken, and those pieces are no easy task to master by any standards. Am I right?

I'm no particular fan of Ms Hiltons sound, but when hearing pupils that have studied with her, her sound does not carry through to them, and many are fine musicians and clarinettists in their own right. As for Ms King, she is going along quite happily living in the suburbs in London. From what I could gather from the lesson I had with her last year, she isn't playing that much herself anymore, but is still teaching at the Guildhall and playing piano quite a bit. A brilliant musician whose value to the development of the clarinet should never be underestimated, in my oppinion

Thea King has a fantastic sound, and plays in a style very different from Ms. Hilton. I just fine Ms. Hilton to sound coarse -especially in the upper register and throat notes. Musically she is very good, but sound is a big part of technique....
