I used to play 'many years ago' Vandoren B45 which my teachers in middle school and private recommended. I used it up till 10th grade when I switched to Lurie crystal 'to be different'. It was great. In college went back to B45 freshman year after my teacher wasn't impressed with the crystal saying it was giving me stuffy sound. However I audtioned using that and impressed the panel. Later in college I went through about 4 others, Larry Combs LC1,LC3, Genussa Exellente, Vandoren M13, Chedeville(refaced by my professor). After college as a professional I went to a charming Ch.Bay which I've been using for sometime now. However it plays great in an open space(concert hall) but like blowing through straw in a closed space (practice room).
The quest continues...I recently acquired a B45profile88series13, Dan Johnston H3 and another Ch.Bay Artiste model.

I think the point is clear. It's a charming vignette encapsulating a young person's search for self and identity as symbolized by the clarinet mouthpiece. A kind of mini Bildungsroman or epigram worthy of a Cattulus, Goethe or Kleist.
Must all postings lead to counter postings? Or can some simply stand without comment?
Seems to me there are two kinds of BB postings: the "call and response" (most common) and the rarer "impressionist tableau," the latter not requiring (or worthy of) any reaction.

I think you're stretching a bit (a lot!) here ...

That is your quest then you will quit it or die still searching. There is no such thing as the perfect mouthpiece. You have to find one and learn to deal with all it tendencies good or bad. Most pro mouthpieces are lateral switches...
goodluck with your quest though

The only two limitations known concerning the search for the perfect mpc is:
1. The depth of your storage shelf, and
2. The depth of your wallet.

Id' rather die trying. Although I completely agree that I will probably never find the perfect mouthpiece (although I know a number of people who have. Just look at Sherman Friedland's pages and you'll see he had the "perfect" mouthpiece for a great number of years), I think the whole fun is in the search. Like a scavenger hunt. Sure it'd be great if you finally get that prize, but in the meantime the hunt is where the real joy and fun is!
I can't afford to look at many more mouthpieces, but I'll always be trying out this and that one. I have a great one right now, but down the road I'll be looking. Maybe not even with a real purpose of replacing, but just cause it's fun to try out new ones! Plus, you just never know . . . . . !

Of course I have a box full of mouthpieces. Some new, many used, some cheap, some expensive. But I came across a little piece of rubber that said HS** on it and dont think I may find one better. I have 3 other Selmers and they seem to be very good. Even the $3 Goldentones I have sound better than my new Vandoren.

I have a desk drawer that proves you will never find the 'perfect' mouthpiece or ligature. This week I'm back on the Street. I think next week I'll play on a Kaspar. After that, I'm not sure. Suggestions?

My experience has been that a given mp will respond differently on separate occasions. My belief is that it is actually the other variables that are varying and making me believe it is the mouthpiece.

It is far more profitable to spend ones time trying to find a perfect reed! I have more success with a mouthpiece if one learns to adapt reeds to it...the whole of idea of searching for some ideal piece that doesn't exist may mean the player has reached a level of technical development they can't exceed!

I am still playing my 1970 "Ithica" Bay mpc on which Charlie copied my Kaspar #14 facing. I also use my Chicago Kaspar for orchestral gigs and have a second Ithica Bay in researve that plays exactly like my Kaspar. I found mine a long time ago, although over the years I have tried many newer ones--including the Greg Smith Cicero and Chedeville models (which, BTW, are excellant)--but I always seem to eventually return to my old friends. Good luck with your search and try to remember that it is "fun."

Dear William:
My Hite plays and sounds so much like my Chedeville Lelandais piece that I use it exclusively.
I also have had an easier go of finding reeds that work well on it!!!!
Bravo for sticking to a good piece and playing on the same one. I experiment once in a while, and was happy with the B40 for a time, but found the resistance over-tiring. Now I am back to the sound and more important, the feel I like!

Why does the poster not tell us why he is unhappy with his current sound/setup??? Seems like a waste to keep looking without a definte reason......
